If you want to get rid of 'counter' in front of your sub-captions, use to redefine the command: \thesubfigure by:

\renewcommand*{\thesubfigure}{}

(originally one in subfigure.sty is

\renewcommand*{\thesubfigure}{(\alph{subfigure})}
